Cleats

Boat cleats are used throughout a vessel to secure rope. Most boats use traditional horn cleats, but in recent years a few variations have come onto the market. If it is time to update your craft, consider updating your cleats as well. OC BOAT SUPPLIES carries a vast inventory of all things nautical for every boat and boating enthusiast. We stock boat cleats for every purpose from Davis, Sea Dog, Taco Marine, JIF Marine, Attwood, Perko, Speed Cinch, and others. You may purchase an economical Nylon Heavy Duty Open Base Cleat from Sea Dog, up to an Attwood Stainless Steel Flush Mount Marine Cleat worthy of any yacht. Here is a run-down of the types of boat cleats we carry:

Types of Boat Cleats that OC Boat Supplies Stocks Include:

  • A horn cleat is the traditional design, that is parallel to the deck or the axis of the spar. It attaches to a flat surface or a spar, and resembles an anvil.

  • A cam cleat: A pair of Spring-loaded cams pinch the rope, allowing it to be adjusted easily, and quickly released when under load.

  • A zig-zag cleat: The rope is wound through four successive cleat heads molded to one cleat base for a more secure hold and less slippage.

  • A jam cleat. Here the line is pinched in a v-shaped slot.

  • A clam cleat (or jam cleat) in which the rope is held between two fluted stationary pieces. This cleat resembles two halves of a clam shell positioned back to back. It is more compact than a cam cleat, but the rope is less easily released under stress.

Most boaters are very familiar with nautical knots including the best to use to secure a rope to a cleat. These knots are known as cleat hitches.
